Electric Blue Haps (Sciaenochromis fryeri) originate from Lake Malawi in africa. In this article, we are going to go over the basics of caring for them.

Sciaenochromis fryeri are semi aggressive. They can be housed with other Haplochromis cichlids and Mbuna cichlids, but it isn't a good idea to house them with Peacock Cichlids. The haps will kill the peacocks if you house them together. They are tropical fish, so they cana't be housed with coldwater fish and they require a heater. They also require a fairly large tank.

Adult Electric Blue Haps require at least a 4 foot, 55 gallon tank, but a 6 foot tank is preferable. I have 3 haps in a 40 gallon growout tank, but I plan to move them to a larger tank soon. Haps also require good water quality. I use an AquaClear 70 HOB filter on my 40 gallon tank. A good water change schedule for Haps is 30 percent weekly.

The females aren't very colorful, but the males are very colorful. They have intense blue coloring as the name of the fish suggests. They are a good beginner African Cichlid. The average max size is around 6 inches.
