Vegetables such as blanched spinach and spirulina flakes should make up a lot of their diet. They should also be fed some meaty foods such as brine shrimp and krill.
Breeding
They are maternal mouthbrooders. A ratio of 1 male to 4 females is best. The female will carry the brood of 5-30 eggs for 3-4 weeks before releasing free swimming fry.

They are best kept with other semi-aggressive Lake Malawi cichlids.
