Jardini Arowana, Gulf saratoga, Australian bonytongue, Australian Arowana
Scientific Name
Scleropages jardinii
Family
Osteoglossidae
Origin
Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia.
Temperament
Aggressive.
Maximum Size
36 inches, but they usually don't reach that size in aquaria.
Minimum Tank Size
180 US Gallons
Tank Setup
They just need a lot of swimming space, and they require a good canopy on the tank, as they are good at jumping. Tank decor is not required.
Tank Region
Top
Diet
Feed high quality pellets along with some live/frozen foods like prawns or frozen bloodworms. A lot of people like to feed them live feeder fish, but I recommend against doing that, because of the risk of parasites.
Breeding
It is rare for them to spawn in normal aquariums because they require a very large tank to reproduce, but they are bred in large fish farms. They are maternal mouthbrooders.
Compatibility
They are generally pretty aggressive, sometimes they can be kept with larger species, but some can't be kept with any other fish at all.
Ease of Keeping
Moderate.
Care
pH: 6.8-7.5, Temperature: 75-84 degrees Fahrenheit
They can live for 8-12 years with proper care.
