Provide territories made of rocks and wood along with open swimming space. They will uproot plants.

Diet
They are omnivores. Feed high quality cichlid pellets along with live/frozen foods such as brine shrimp. Also feed vegetable matter such as Spirulina flakes.
Breeding
They are substrate spawners. The pair will clean a spawning site, usually a flat rock. Both parents guard the eggs, and they hatch after two days. The fry then become free-swimming about a week later.
Compatibility
They are territorial, especially when they are breeding. They can be kept with other Central American cichlids of a similar size. Smaller fish will usually be eaten.
