I have a betta, he is pretty old and he is in a 2.5 gallon tank. I noticed a few days ago that his scales were kind of pineconed, but he is acting fine otherwise. What do you think it is? I had a betta with pinecone scales a few years ago, but it died shortly after I noticed it. I noticed it a few days ago in this betta and he is still acting fine. What do you think it is?

Usually pineconing is caused by dropsy. What is your temps on the little tank. Try to keep at 80 and keep his water clean.

I don't have a heater for the tank but my bedroom stays pretty warm. I haven't done a water change in a while, but I regularly top off the tank.

He is still alive, but he is acting a little more lethargic.

I just noticed that he died :(. I had him for a pretty long time, probably around 2 years. I am going to do water changes on all of my tanks today and I will probably be getting a new betta soon.

I will actually be cleaning the tanks tomorrow, and I will probably get a new betta sometime this week.
